The Opening Winter Season Weekend in Norway

Unlike most countries in the world, a new television season is being introduced today. The world cup opening in cross country for men and women attracts Norwegian viewers. The opening event take place in Beitostølen in Norway this year.

Speed skating, biathlon, ski jumping, downhill skiing, and Nordic combined will also dominate the television screen until March. On the other hand, ice hockey is not a dominating television sport in Norway as in Sweden and Finland.

You may not find one Norwegian man or woman that haven't heard of Petter Northug, Marit Bjørgen, Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Anders Jacobsen, Annette Sagen, Aksel Lund Svindal and Magnus Moan. Or the names of their closest competitors.

In February 2010 begins the Winter Olympics in Toronto, a real climax if Norway wins many gold medals. Silver is not good enough, unless a double.
Every weekend we can follow winter sports on televison betweeen nine and five, both Saturdays and Sundays. Some competitions will also take place in the weekdays.

But the most important difference between Norway and abroad is the indiscrimination between sexes. The coach of the national speed skating team, Peter Müller (USA), lost his job with no further compensation after an episode where he sexually harassed Maren Haugli.
