H1N1 on the doorsteps

The new A (H1N1) flu will probably become pandemic sooner or later. Pandemic flu occurs approximately four times in a century. Today, about 600 people have become infected across the world. This number will probably increase dramatically. But why should I, or any other Nordic citizen become worried? Do we have any reason? The truth is that people are hoarding face masks and buying Tamiflu. The "swine flu" is on the news everyday. Are thousands of Norwegians going to die? An expert on influenza told us that's not the case.

The nature is cruel. A fast spreading disease may reduce a population of rats to a level that is sustainable again. War refugees do not die of bullets and bombs, but from diseases spreading in an overcrowded area with lack of clean water, food and medicines. Animals don't know how to avoid get infected, and refugees have no other options. But in Norway, we live in extreme good conditions.

First of all, Norway has very low population density. The virus cannot spread that effectively. People are well educated. We have great access on clean water and soap. Medicines are available. The Norwegian health service is the best there is. We only need to take hygienic precautions:

1. Clean hands often.
2. Wash with soap in minimum 10 seconds.
3. Use (paper) towel and moisturizer afterwards..
4. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
5. Avoid sneezing and coughing uncovered.
6. Stay home if infected.
7. Wear face mask if infected (uncommon).

We shouldn't worry!
